Do-Not-Call (DNC)

Registries and internal lists of numbers that have opted out of telemarketing calls and must be suppressed.

Definition

Do-Not-Call (DNC) refers to the national registry and company-specific lists of phone numbers whose owners have asked not to receive telemarketing calls; the FCC applies the same restriction to marketing texts. In the US, callers must scrub against the federal DNC registry and honor internal opt-outs, with penalties for violations. Checking DNC suppression before any calling or texting campaign is required under the FTC's Telemarketing Sales Rule and the FCC's TCPA rules, alongside the TCPA's separate prior-express-consent duties.
